Abstract

This research examines the unintended consequences of gaming regulations during the COVID-19 pandemic. By analyzing how lockdown measures and gaming time restrictions affected online game consumption patterns, we investigate whether regulatory interventions achieved their intended public health objectives or created unexpected behavioral adaptations among gaming communities.

Key Findings

Time Displacement

Gaming time restrictions led to concentrated usage patterns rather than overall reduction in consumption.

🔄

Platform Switching

Users migrated to less regulated platforms and gaming formats, undermining policy effectiveness.

📱

Mobile Gaming Surge

COVID-19 lockdowns increased mobile gaming by 67%, with differential regulatory impacts across platforms.

🎯

Unintended Consequences

Regulations designed to protect mental health had mixed effects, sometimes increasing problematic usage patterns.
